You can shorten URLs using various free online services. Here’s a quick guide:

        1. Bitly
        Go to: bitly.com
Steps: Paste your URL in the shortening field and click “Shorten.”
Additional features: Customize URLs, track clicks (requires account).

        2. TinyURL
        Go to: tinyurl.com
Steps: Enter your URL and click “Make TinyURL!”
Customization: Choose a custom alias if available.

        4. is.gd
        Go to: is.gd
Steps: Paste your URL, click "Shorten!"

To shorten a URL, you can follow these steps:

            1. Choose a URL shortener: Visit websites like Bitly, TinyURL, or Rebrandly.
            2. Paste your long URL: Copy your lengthy URL and paste it into the provided field on the shortener's site.
            3. Click on "Shorten": The site will generate a shortened link.
            4. Copy the shortened URL: Use this new link for sharing.

These services often allow you to customize the shortened URL and track its performance.

You can shorten a URL using online services like:

              • Bitly (bitly.com)
              • list itemTinyURL (tinyurl.com)
              • list itemGoogle URL Shortener (previously available, now migrated to Firebase Dynamic Links)
              • list itemRebrandly (rebrandly.com)
These services typically require you to paste the original URL, and they provide a shortened version that redirects to the original link. Some platforms also allow you to customize the short URL or track clicks for analytics.

              Thanks!

Choose a URL Shortener: Pick a tool that turns long URLs into shorter, more manageable versions. Some popular options include Bitly, TinyURL, or Google URL Shortener.

Copy Your Long URL: Highlight the long URL you want to shorten, right-click it, and select "Copy."

Go to the URL Shortener: Open a new tab in your browser, paste the URL of the shortener tool in the address bar, and hit enter.

Paste Your Long URL: Once the shortener website is open, look for a text box where you can paste your long URL. Right-click the box and select "Paste."

Shorten It: There should be a button that says something like “Shorten URL” or “Make Shorter.” Click it.

Copy and Use Your Shortened URL: After a moment, the shortener will give you a new, shorter URL. Copy this new URL and use it wherever you need.

That's it! Now you have a shorter URL that's easier to manage and share.

If you want more control and branding, consider setting up your URL shortener with tools like YOURLS or Polr. These require some technical knowledge to install on your server.

                              3. API Integration:
If you need to shorten URLs programmatically, many of these services provide APIs. You can integrate them into your workflow using code or automation tools like Zapier.

@laurentjb URL shorteners like Bitly, TinyURL, and Rebrandly can condense long web addresses into shorter, more manageable links. Simply copy and paste the long URL into the shortener's field and click "Shorten." This is especially useful for sharing links on social media or in emails. However, exercise caution when clicking on shortened links from unknown sources, as they could lead to malicious websites.

So, we use Bit.ly, its really good URL shortner, our digital marketing agency / web design business, uses it to shorten a URL, when posting links on Facebook.

@laurentjb said in How can I shorten a url?:

I've got way too many long url's but I have no idea how to shorten them?

To shorten long URLs, you can use a URL shortener service like Bitly, TinyURL, or Google's Firebase Dynamic Links. These services generate a shorter version of your URL, making it easier to share. If you have a custom domain, you can also set up branded short URLs for a more professional appearance.

@laurentjb Long URLs are not that much of a problem -- it's typically a warning sign in case they are not formatted properly.

If your URLs are already getting inbound links & ranking/receiving traffic from search engines, you should keep them as is & think about optimizing your URL structure in the future.

                                                    I hope that helps!

Added a canonical ref tag and SERPs tanked, should we change it back?

canonical indexing serps canonical duplicate url issue

My client's CMS uses an internal linking structure that includes index.php at the end of the URLs. The site also works using SEO-friendly URLs without index.php, so the SEO tool identified a duplicate content issue. Their marketing team thought the pages with index.php would have better link equity and rank higher, so they added a canonical ref tag, making the index.php version of the pages the canonical page. As a result, the site dropped in the rankings by a LOT and has not recovered in the last 3-months. It appears that Google had automatically selected the SEO-friendly URLs as the canonical page, and by switching, it re-indexed the entire site. The question we have is, should they change it back? Or will this cause the site to be reindexed again, resulting in an even lower ranking?

MozBar URL Flag shows wrong country

My site has been up for about 6 months, and is visible on google (http://www.forforce.com.br/). Even when searching for my exact brand name "For Force Suplementos", using google brazil from Curitiba (the stores physical city) I show up on page 3, so I'm obviously doing something wrong. I just today started looking into SEO.  And we haven't done anything to earn a penalty. (There's no links actually anywhere but our facebook page to us, which I know is a problem I need to work on). Anyway, I just signed up for a MozPro subscription, and installed the MozBar.  Looking at the On-Page elements, next to the URL, I see a U.S. flag, and am wondering if that is part of my problem.  The site is physically hosted in the U.S., so maybe that's where the flag comes from (Quality) hosting is too expensive in Brazil).  Is this something I should be worried about? I also am using CloudFlare to help speed up the site, which I don't think has a Brazil POP. Thanks in advance for any advice! -Eric
